Welcome to another packed week full of workshops and user group meetings, all organized by the GC Digital Fellows! Read on to learn more about the exciting events coming up this week. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to use Python to improve your research, now is your opportunity to join a short workshop series that GC Digital Fellow Rebecca Krisel and Postdoctoral Fellow Chelsea Lane are leading this month. The series includes 5 workshops that take participants from the basics through ingesting data using APIs. Or, if you’re more interested in website design, you might prefer another series led by Chelsea Lane and GC Digital Fellow Zach Lloyd. Details about both series can be found below. Workshops
Social Annotation with Hypothesis and Manifold, Wednesday, October 5th, 11 – 12:30 PM | REGISTER HERE
Laurie Hurson (TLC) and Robin Miller (GCDI) will introduce Hypothes.is and Manifold as platforms for teaching with social annotation. They will share pedagogical models and assignments that use social annotation to improve student engagement.
R You Ready? Beginning Your Research with R, Thursday Oct 6th, 12:00-1:30 | REGISTER HERE
This workshop is intended to get interested users up to speed with the R language and the RStudio developing environment. By the end, you’ll be able to install and load packages, read in data, do basic data wrangling and visualization, and navigate the RStudio environment.
User Group Meetings
Mapping User Group, Thursday Oct 6th, 4:00 – 5:00 PM | REGISTER HERE
The GIS and Mapping Group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching. In the group, we discuss map mapping concepts and techniques, learn how to use new tools and explore different datasets to practice our storytelling skills with maps. This semester, the mapping group will meet every other week on Thursdays from 4 to 5pm. In our first meeting on Oct 6th, we will discuss basic mapping concepts and the social and scientific use of maps.
Python User Group, Friday Oct 7th, 3:00 – 4:00 PM | REGISTER HERE
Python User’ Group (or PUG for short) is an open and informal collaborative space for experimentation and exploration with the Python programming language. This week in PUG we will review some of the key concepts learned during the Intro to Python workshop held online on 9/30. If you were not able to attend that workshop but are interested in continuing with the Fall Python Series, this is a great time to catch up and get ready for the next workshop! Python and Web Design Series
Fall Python Series: An Exploration of Research Tools for Beginners, biweekly Fridays from 2-4pm, continuing Friday, October 14th.
The Fall Python Series comprises 5 total workshops that take students from never having used Python before through skills such as text analysis and data cleaning to web scraping and using APIs. Participants are expected to sign up for all workshops in the series (listed below) and maintain regular participation. If you missed our Introduction to Python workshop on 9/30, you are welcome to catch up using our online curriculum and join us for the remaining workshops. Core skills will continue to be explained and reinforced as we work on projects over the course of the semester and in Python User Group (PUG) meetings that meet alternative weeks on Fridays from 3-4:00PM.

Web Development Series
GCDI is hosting a series of four sequential workshops on web development over the course of this academic year. This fall, we will cover setting up the structure of a webpage using HTML CSS, and Bootstrap, and in the spring, we will add interactivity to our web pages using JavasScript and Leaflet.
