In this informative post, GC Digital Fellow Olivia Ildefonso discusses the GIS /Mapping Working Group’s project to assess the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on vulnerable communities in New York and strategize what could be done about it. Olivia discusses a variety of initiatives that took off under this initiative such as COVID and Cages, which studied how the pandemic affected incarcerated people in the United States, and the Food Chain project, which built “a network of over 100 food transport volunteers from across the country to help drive shipments of food from the Midwest to the East Coast.” Olivia and the GIS/Mapping Working Group’s timely action highlights the ways in which digital methods can be used to bring positive change in this world.
