Spouse Surveillance

In an unnerving article, “I Used Apple AirTags, Tiles and a GPS Tracker to Watch My Husband’s Every Move,” Kashmir Hill describes the advanced, and affordable, technology available to individuals to track or record people without their knowledge. (Hill did have her husband’s knowledge, as she mentions early on.) Hill mentions stories about people discovering such devices in their bags or belongings, and worries the stories may become more frequent.

Of particular concern is the role this advanced technology can play in abusive relationships, where such surveillance totalizes the control an abuser can have over their victim, and makes it even more difficult for victims to seek help and escape: it’s hard to get away if you can be found wherever you go. This is a concern society should take deeply seriously, since abusers are often most violent when victims try to leave.
