It Could Happen (T)here: Transnational Advocacy Strategies Around Social Media

In this timely article, Amanda Besar, Jennifer Li, and Valentina Vera Quiroz–writing for the Institute for Rebooting Social Media–re-cap the discussions from workshops dedicated to analyzing the interactions between social media platforms and governments on pressing issues, specifically surveillance and transparency about the use of private data, and balance of power between social media and governments. As the authors note, the workshops considered that although we tend to associate ‘authoritarianism’ with governments, one could also see social media platforms as “digitally authoritarian,” as well, particularly considering the hierarchical organization within the companies themselves.
