Boosting Your Academic Profile and Making Sense of Research Metrics: ORCID, Bibliometrics, and Open Scholarly Publication

October 29 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Free

How can a scholar position their work to receive the broadest possible readership in order to make lasting contributions to their field? How do readers find your work in today’s digital and networked world? One important contributing factor is that readers are able to find you and your work by name; however, your name alone may not be sufficient for other scholars to find your work. You may share a name with another scholar. Your name may change over the arc of your academic career. Perhaps you once used abbreviations or your name was misspelled in a conference proceeding.

Join us for a hands-on introduction to tools that can help make your scholarship more discoverable once it is published. For example, we will explore ORCID, a tool that provides a permanent and unambiguous record of research, and Google Scholar profiles to get a sense of how your work has been cited by other scholars. Moving from Google Scholar into h-index, we will survey the advantages and challenges posed by various scholarly metrics. The workshop concludes with a quick look at CUNY’s own powerful tools for boosting your profile and the discoverability and accessibility of your work, such as CUNY Academic Commons and CUNY Academic Works.
